What to see at Museo Robert Brady
Museo Robert Brady brings together more than 1,300 pieces, with art and objects from several continents alongside Mexican works. The collection includes Mexican colonial furniture, pre-Hispanic figures, and art from Africa, the Americas, Oceania, India and the Far East.
Among the artists represented are Rufino Tamayo, Frida Kahlo, Miguel Covarrubias, Maurice Prendergast, Marsden Hartley and Graham Sutherland. The museum’s Gallery was Brady’s collector’s room, while its Graphic Art Room displays selected pieces, including Murano glass bottles.
The collection is arranged across 14 colorful rooms, preserved as Brady left them. A café is located in the main patio, and the museum also has a small room with audiovisual equipment for cultural events.

The museum’s historic-house setting
The museum occupies Casa de la Torre, behind Cuernavaca Cathedral, in a building that began as part of a 16th-century Franciscan convent. Its history links the building’s religious origins with later use as an observatory and private home.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Cuernavaca’s second bishop, Francisco Plancarte y Navarrete, remodeled the house to serve as an astronomical observatory. The tower above the main entrance dates from that period.
Robert Brady bought Casa de la Torre in 1961, made it his last residence and renovated it to house his collection. He died in 1986. The museum’s official history says it opened to the public in 1990, while Mexico’s Cultural Information System gives its founding date as March 24, 1987.
Sculptures and tropical plants are also part of the garden and patio. Together with the rooms, these outdoor spaces give the former residence a setting that differs from a gallery-only visit.
