What is the Zona Arqueológica de Teopanzolco?

What is the Zona Arqueológica de Teopanzolco?

The Zona Arqueológica de Teopanzolco is a postclassic archaeological site in the Valley of Morelos. Its principal period was the Middle and Late Postclassic, 1200–1521 CE, and the earliest evidence of occupation dates to the Middle Postclassic.

The name Teopanzolco comes from Nahuatl and means “at the old temple.” The site reflects at least three construction stages: older buildings were partly demolished, then newer structures were built over their remains. That layering is part of what makes the complex more than a single temple platform.

Its address is Río Balsas s/n, C.P. 62290, in Vista Hermosa. The archaeological zone sits beside Centro Cultural Teopanzolco, but the cultural center has a separate address.

Which temples and archaeological features should you look for?

The Great Platform, or Gran Basamento, is the site’s main feature, with temples dedicated to Tláloc and Huitzilopochtli on top. As you look across the complex, note how the platform and its stairways organize the archaeological area.

Two older temples were found within the Great Platform. They came to light in 1921 and 2018, adding evidence of the successive building phases beneath the visible structures.

Other named features include the circular Cuauhxicalco platform, Structure 8, Structure 12 and the platform of the Temple of Tezcatlipoca. These names can help you follow the different parts of the site rather than focusing only on its largest structure.

How do you get to Teopanzolco?

From Hotel Juarez, a hotel in Cuernavaca, Teopanzolco is about a 35-minute walk or an 11-minute drive. The site is in Vista Hermosa.

Use the archaeological zone’s address, Río Balsas s/n, Vista Hermosa, Cuernavaca, for navigation. Centro Cultural Teopanzolco is at Río Balsas 22, so you can pair the archaeological visit with the nearby cultural center while keeping their separate addresses in mind.

If you are planning time in the historic centre as well, a Cuernavaca Centro walking guide can help you shape that part of your day. Keep the site visit separate in your timing, since the archaeological zone has its own opening hours.

What are Teopanzolco’s hours, admission prices and visitor rules?

How much time should you allow at Teopanzolco?

Plan your visit around the structures you want to see: the Great Platform and its stairways, the temple remains within it, and the other named platforms and structures. The site’s successive building stages give you a reason to look beyond the main temples and notice how newer construction sits over earlier remains.

Guided visits are available and may help you make sense of the different features. The site’s opening window is 09:00–16:00, Wednesday through Sunday, so check the official site before setting out if your plans depend on a particular visit time.

If you are shaping a full day in town, a one-day Cuernavaca route can fit the visit into a wider city itinerary.
